40 Weeks Study

We're assuming you've already worked through the 40 Days study and have also given each of the preceding topics it's week's worth of attention. If so, let's do some intentional preparation for future fruit bearing.

Week 2 : Hear His Call

Where we left off... 40 Days - Day 2:

The good shepherd makes the difference between a hard life full of fear/struggle and one full of security/plenty. Sheep need only learn to recognize the voice of the shepherd, do “sheepy” things under the protection of the shepherd, and follow where He leads. What does following look like?

What you should learn this week:
  • Christ never leads to a place you are unprepared for. But, He consistently calls us to follow into new growth opportunities.

  • Peter's growth is well documented for us. Observe in his story how the challenges Christ calls him to are proportional to the revelation that has already been given to him.

Some Thoughts for Group Discussion

Show your progress on the memory verse, discuss your experience with the Faith in Action challenge, and discuss the various questions in the reading schedule.

Together look at the continuation of Peter's story through the following passages:

  • (Acts 1) Notice how Peter is leading others in verse 15.

  • (Acts 12) Peter had a good idea of what his leadership would cost him.

  • (1 Peter 4:12-14) The mature Peter sees that following always has an expected cost.

  • (John 21:18-19) Was Peter's eventual end a surprise to Christ?

Christ will never ask us to participate in something we are not ready for. But, growth requires challenge. So, every invitation will draw us out of our comfort zone. At every step, the challenge to Peter was proportionate to the revelation that Peter had already experienced.

Ultimately, like Abraham and Peter, God intends to bless you so you can be a blessing to others. When you see Abraham in scripture, perk up... he's a really important part of God's message.

Your "Faith in Action" challenge this week:

Spend 15 minutes un-interrupted listening for God's voice.

  • Isolate yourself completely from all electronic devices and other people.

  • Take only a printed copy of the memory verse.

  • Do not read or do anything to "entertain" your mind.

  • Simply think about every aspect of this week's verse and pray that the Holy Spirit open your heart to hear God's voice and know where He wants to lead you.

  • If you don't make it to 15 minutes without getting derailed, try in successive days until you do.
